How to Get the Dog Urine Smell Out of a Couch
Dog urine can be one of the most difficult things to remove from a couch. Even after the stain has been removed, the odor often lingers. Many odor fighters will mask the urine smell for a short time, but eventually it returns. Treat dog urine with a cleaner made from enzymes. Enzyme cleaners are designed to eat the proteins in urine and neutralize the odor. You can find enzyme-base cleaners at pet supply stores or online.
Instructions
- 1
Blot any excess urine out of the couch using absorbent towels or paper towels. Put the towels on the urine and place as much weight as possible on the spot. Use either your body weight or put a heavy object over the towels. Replace them as necessary until no more urine comes out. Skip this step if the urine spot is already dry.
2Remove the couch cushion covers, if possible, and wash them in the washing machine according to the requirements of the fabric. When in doubt, use cold water, a mild detergent and hang the covers to dry. You can add vinegar to the rinse cycle to help remove the odor.
3Rinse the urine spot on the couch using plain water. It is important to remove as much of the urine as possible before treating the spot. If you have used other cleaners, the plain water will help remove them, making the treatment more effective. Use a wet vacuum or extractor to pull the moisture out of the couch. If this is not possible, use towels to remove the water.
4Spray an enzyme-based cleaner on the urine spot. Test the enzyme cleaner on a neutral part of the couch to make sure it doesnt affect the dye. Saturate the couch with the spray and let it sit according to package instructions. Some cleaners require you to blot the cleaner out of the couch, others need to air-dry.
5Replace the couch cushions when the couch is dry.
