How To Easily Make Homemade Dog Food
When we tell people how we make our dogs food and the other ways in which we care for them, people sometimes look at us like we have three heads. They say that our dogs are spoiled. We say theyre well cared for. Is there a difference?
Dog people
Dog people are a special breed... pun fully intended. We care for our dogs like they are our children and in some cases they might as well be. You only want the best for your little four legged friends and sometimes it includes making things yourself instead of buying them pre-made. Dog food is something that is hotly debated amongst veterinarians, dog owners, pet store owners and manufacturers alike. From Kibble to raw diets, from cans to pouches, manufacturers are adding vitamins, vegetables, fillers and all sorts of other additives to make their food the healthiest food money can buy; but is it really? Special breeds need special care, so is all dog food good for all dogs?
Specialty foods
Check the shelves and youll see dog food for older dogs, inactive dogs, puppies and overweight dogs. Theres high nutrition, high energy, high prices... what ever happened to old fashioned dog food? I hesitate to even remember what my uncles farm dog ate everyday and lived to a ripe old age. Trust me, my uncle was not into shopping for dog food. Im pretty sure they bought whatever was cheap and a lot of it. Any slaughtering that was done on the farm would of course, produce discarded items. The cats, the dog and any other farm vermin could fight over the remains. My aunt would toss leftovers that no one was interested in out into the yard. Oddly enough, this is probably what kept the old farm dog healthy. Raw meat and fresh vegetables.
Theres your recipe
The question of how to make homemade dog food is a relatively easy one to answer. All you need to do is look at the lives dogs lead in the past when they ran in packs. They would kill for their food, eating it raw, and ingesting the already digested fruits and vegetables that their prey had eaten. Anywhere from 60% up to 80% of your dogs diet should consist of raw meats. Their systems are adept at handling the bacterias that our bodies cannot tolerate. Rabbit, eggs, duck, turkey, lamb, chicken, beef, fish, venison, ostrich, even emu, are all meats that are particularly good for a dogs nutritional needs. Cooking them destroys their natural vitamins.
The same goes for their vegetables. Fresh is best, but many vegetables should be blanched to aid in digestion and reduce gassy tendencies. These vegetables should then be ground in a blender or food processor which simulates the already digested fruits and vegetables of the prey they would eat in the wild. Some fruits are very tasty for dogs due to their natural sugars, but some should be avoided.
We joke every now and then that our dogs eat better than we do. And sometimes they do!
