How to Make a Banana Costume for Dogs
Its no secret that dogs look adorable in costumes. While they may not like it as much as their owners do, most dogs will usually allow you to dress them in a costume for at least a short amount of time. For shorter, longer dogs, a fun idea for a dog costume is to make them look like a banana. This costume is easy to make with a few measurements and some very basic sewing skills. With its ribbon enclosure, it is easy to dress your dog without having to slip anything uncomfortable over his heads.
Instructions
- 1
Measure the dog from the tip of the snout to the tip of the tail. This will be the length of banana costume. Measure the circumference around the dogs face, starting above the eyes and wrapping around his snout. This will be the size you will cut the opening in your dogs costume to allow him to see, bark and eat easily.
2Measure from your dogs neck to his legs. Then, measure the distance between your dogs front and hind legs and across your dogs underside from his left to right legs. Finally, take a measurement around your dogs legs. This measurement will be for cutting leg holes in your costume. You may want to add an inch or two to these measurements so that your dog can walk around comfortably.
3Use your measurements to draw a pattern on a sheet of tracing paper. Draw one side of a banana to the length indicated in your first measurement. Use your measurements taken in the first two steps to assign the positions for your leg holes and face hole. Also, leave an opening towards to back of your costume for your dogs tail.
4Fold your yellow vinyl fabric in half and lay on a surface. Place your banana pattern on top of your folded fabric to ensure that your costume will be even on both sides. Trace out your pattern directly onto the fabric and cut out.
5Sew your fabric pieces together along the top of your costume, remembering to leave the opening for your dogs tail. Use scissors to cut out the leg holes and face hole as indicated on the costumes pattern. If desired, finish the edges around the hole with a zig-zag stitch with your sewing machine, or by pressing on hem tape.
6Connect the bottom of your dogs costume by attaching four lengths of ribbon by each of your dogs legs. These ribbons should be attached with a sewing machine. Once your dog is in the costume, tie your ribbons together to ensure that the costume stays on your dog. Paint your banana with bruise marks or company logo stickers as desired.
