If you want your dog to behave correctly you need to be a pack leader. And to establish yourself as a leader, one of the best things to do is go walking with your dog!

You can begin with a standard buckle collar and a strong lead. I dont recommend retractable leads at this stage. It is best if you use a wide collar so that you dont hurt the dog.

Firstly walk out the door and have the dog sit and stay inside until you are outside, only then let the dog follow you.

The dog should walk on your left hand side always. If he becomes tempted to change stop and persuade him back to the left side and then give him lots of praise before continuing to walk.

To maintain control over the dog you need to make sure that he does not walk to far in front, because if you allow this to happen then the dog is walking you and that is no way to maintain control. A good rule of thumb is that the dogs shoulder should not be much in front of your own legs.

If your dog should venture to far out in front stop walking. Give a little tug to get his attention and then gently pull him back until he is back in the right place.

You need to have a training noise established for your dog. A clicking of the tongue or other simple sound works well. You can use this sound instead of the word "no", which can become white noise to a dog during a walk. Use this noise at the same time as the little tug on the leash.

As you are walking if your dog stays within an acceptable distance for a period of time give him lost of praise in a happy voice. It can also help to carry treats for these occasions. If the dog walks to far forward repeat the stop, pull and noise.

Determination, patience and persistence are the keys here. It can take weeks or even months before most dogs become perfect walkers. You cant expect your dog to be a polite walker in just one day. You need to keep training and practicing.

If you lose patience or become upset you are just putting the dog back in control. You and your dog will get along the best if you are the clear leader.

If you find that your dong is always charging forward no matter how much practicing, you can try adding a simple touch to your technique. So as well as the light tug and the training sound try a light touch on his leg or putting your hand in front of his face. These additional signals can help him to learn faster and reduce your frustration.
