How to Protect a Dogs Skin Against Drool
Some health problems such as tooth decay and liver disease can cause a dog to drool excessively. However, some dogs just naturally do so, sometimes because the skin on the lower jaw is loose and cannot contain all the saliva the dog produces. If you own a breed, such as the Newfoundland, that tends to drool excessively, then you will have to deal with this condition. Not only is drool unsightly, it also can irritate the skin.

Give your dog free access to fresh water at all times. The sloppy drinking habits of these dogs will help wash away some of the drool. The more your dog drinks, the more drool gets washed away.
2Wipe the drool off once or twice a day gently with a damp rag. Make sure to wipe in between any folds of skin, where the most irritation occurs.
3Put a bib on your dog. You can use a specially made dog bib, or tie a bandanna loosely around your dogs neck. This coverage will prevent saliva from getting to the skin on your dogs neck.
4Contact your veterinarian for advice. He may recommend daily use of an ointment, such as lanolin, to prevent chaffing and irritation from the drool. Always ask your vet before applying anything to your dogs skin.
